The BYS Board would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of the BYS families that re-arranged their evening to attend the council meetings on Monday, December 9th. Players and umpires attended and complete families came out in the cold with kids dressed in their BYS team gear. It was truly heart-warming to see us come together as a community and fill the Brunswick Council chamber. The councilman of this city noted that they have NEVER had that many people at a “Council of the Whole” meeting. The amount of support displayed in that room had everything to do with the unanimous decision made Monday evening to renew a lease of the City of Brunswick Parks & Rec fields to Brunswick Youth Sports. So, to everyone who came up Monday night or called a Councilman or even just had our organization in positive thoughts on Monday evening – THANK YOU. We could not have completed this very important step without your attention and support.
What does this City Council decision mean to our organization?
The agreement reached last night was a verbal agreement between BYS and the city of Brunswick for a period of 10 years for the city fields. An official agreement will be drafted by the Law Director, reviewed by Parks and Recreation and then given to BYS to review and approve. We spoke to City Council last night and we have a good idea of the provisions of the lease. There are still talks on the schedule with the schools about the school fields that we also utilize each summer. We will update you as we know more about the progress of the decision regarding the school fields. In the meantime, we can go back to planning for a great future and a 2014 season.
How can I get more involved – get additional information?
Attend a BYS Board Meeting - As we chatted with families over the weekend, many families noted that they wanted to be more involved; wanted to help BYS move forward. You don’t have to be a Board member in order to help the BYS organization. We hold a BYS general body meeting once a month at Brunswick City Hall to discuss league issue and make league decisions. They are held on the second Thursday of every month. Meetings begin at 7:30pm from September through April and at 8:30pm from May to August. After attending two consecutive meetings, you gain BYS voting rights. In order to keep those voting rights, you need to keep attending a number of consecutive Board meetings, but it does give families a way to have a say in the decisions made for the group.
“Like” us on Facebook – In the age of immediate access to information, a new league-wide BYS Facebook site has been set up for the families of our organization. This is another medium for communicaton as we hope to use it to notify about rainouts, league information and maybe game highlights. The website will hold our latest newsletter, league rules and schedules and a section under “contact us” where emails can be sent to each league’s commissioner. Like last year, we will NOT be mailing the newsletter for the 2014 season. It will need to be printed off the website. For those not on Facebook, the website will also be displaying our latest Facebook site posts on the home page of our website for further review.
What is coming up that I should add to the calendar?
REGISTRATION for the 2014 season - The 2014 newsletter will be posted to the website after the holiday season. The BYS newsletter will hold all of the usual forms and information on registration pricing, deadlines and date/times for the in-person registration day. You can either mail in your forms or bring them to In-Person registration day on Sunday, February, 2, 2014 (Super Bowl Sunday - Exact time and location will be named later).
