Club Celebrates Summer Youth Leaders

This summer 78 teens and young adults were in leadership roles in the Boys & Girls Club Summer Camp programs. They consisted of counselors, assistant counselors, junior staff members, and leaders-in-training. All were positive role models for the hundreds of campers who attended Summer Camp. On Thursday, September 19th, the Boys & Girls Club hosted an evening of celebration honoring the accomplishments and successes of the 2013 Summer Camp Youth Leaders.

With the help of the Youth Leaders, the Boys & Girls Club camp counselors and year-round professional staff ensure a safe and fun experience for every camper. At the Boys & Girls Club’s Summer Camp program, campers participate in activities encouraging increased physical, social and emotional development, improved fitness, positive decision-making, creativity, leadership, and fun. Weekly themes provided campers the opportunity to participate in varying swim programs, sports and recreation, and arts and crafts all summer.

Throughout Summer Camp programming, the Boys & Girls Club partners with the Fresh Air Fund to grant children staying with local families the opportunity for a fun-filled Summer Camp experience. “Anyone who knows the Ridgefield Boys & Girls Club staff knows that they are there for parents and kids when they need them most, and in all the most fun ways.  That same wonderful approach has never been truer than how the B&G Club helps our local Fresh Air Fund families.  B&G Club staff makes Ridgefield's Fresh Air kids feel not only welcome, but super special.  In addition, many host families simply couldn't make the fresh air experience happen without the support of the club's amazing day camp.  And club staff never skip a beat, no matter how late information may arrive nor how last minute requests may come because they truly love every Ridgefield child” said Ann O’Brien, Club parent.

The Club also works with the Ridgefield Public Schools Special Education Department to incorporate a safe and welcoming learning environment for the students attending the Summer Camp program.

As the average daily attendance rate increases each year, from less than 150 campers in 2008 to approximately 225 campers in 2013, the Boys & Girls Club continues to see heightened growth in their Summer Camp Program due to the success of integrating Youth Leadership Programs, and maintaining successful partnerships with the Fresh Air Fund and Ridgefield Public School System.

“Summer Camp continues to grow and improve due to unmatched staff dedication to youth. Our professional team is exceptional, but our season team is a group of young people that grew up at the Club as youngsters and that is the biggest difference. They have a genuine love and commitment to our campers and the Club that is truly unique and extremely powerful. We have a culture of leaders creating future leaders here,” said Mike Flynn, Director of Operations at the Boys & Girls Club.
